Down to Business

Leading at Rio+20 and Beyond

In this paper we share the perspectives of over 1,600 sustainability experts from 117 countries, and nearly 25,000 members of the global public from 22 countries. Through a series of surveys this spring, we gathered insights from these groups about their views of the state of sustainable development and perspectives on what is needed from business to accelerate progress.

The Regeneration Roadmap will explore the past, current and future state of sustainability leadership. In the year ahead, GlobeScan and SustainAbility will launch:

Two international influencer surveys

The first influencer survey will poll experts from business, government, civil society and academia on their expectations for the Rio+20 Summit and of public and private sector sustainability leadership.

Following the Rio+20 Summit, a second influencer survey will assess the Summit’s effectiveness and capture the predictions of experts on the forward sustainability agenda.
Surveys will be conducted in partnership with WBCSD, the Business Action for Sustainable Development 2012 (BASD 2012) network, the GLOBE forum of legislators, Civicus and Net Impact.

Two quantitative public opinion surveys across 20+ countries

As a complement to the influencer surveys, we will conduct public opinion surveys. The first public opinion survey will invite the public to assess collective progress on the sustainability agenda to date. The second survey is an in-depth online survey of consumer attitudes, motivations and behaviours relating to sustainable consumption.

I am working with the Bay2Rio+20 Global Green Economies Initiative, a project for global green economies leadership cooperation between the San Francisco Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro. We have published numerous blog articles about our experiences, and I would be happy to share some of our impressions and outcomes from the Summit. In general, we are working to create interactive opportunities for people from all over the world to contribute to discussions that promote city-scale collaboration for sustainable development and policy innovation in the new Green Economy. The project leveraged the UN Rio+20 Earth Summit in June as a launch platform for a series of initiatives aligning with one of the two primary themes of the conference; green economy in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development. First among these is the new Global Urban Innovation Exchange (www.uixglobal.com), currently in development.

Bay2Rio+20 sent a delegation of about 10 people to represent the Bay Area at the summit, functioning as an information bridge to foster real-time dialogue with Bay Area. On June 23rd, at the conclusion of the UN Earth Summit, the team hosted an on-line global forum, inviting participants from around the world to share their thoughts and impressions regarding the outcomes from the UN process at two workshops that took place simultaneously in Rio and San Francisco (USA). Utilizing the Crowdbrite crowdsourcing platform, the team expanded the localized discussions in Rio and San Francisco to incorporate input from on-line participants who contributed their ideas and comments from home computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones from other parts of the world. In the future, we will be hosting further initiatives focusing on the 2013 America’s Cup, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, building on the momentum from the 2012 Earth Summit to strengthen cooperation and economic development ties between Brazil, the Bay Area, and beyond.
